Intimate and Sexual Health
Supportive, confidential care for hormonal balance, sexual wellness, and reproductive health. Treatments are tailored to individual goals and needs.
How common are sexual health concerns?
Very common, for women and men alike. Up to 43% of women and 31% of men report some degree of sexual dysfunction. Between 30 million and 50 million men in the United States have erectile dysfunction: about 40% of men at age 40, and 70% by age 70. Even so, it is not a routine part of aging.
What can affect sexual health?
Usually more than one thing at once:
- Hormones, such as lower estrogen around menopause or low testosterone
- Blood flow: conditions that affect the blood vessels are the most common cause of erection problems
- Health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease
- Medicines, including some antidepressants and blood pressure medicines
- Stress, anxiety, depression and relationship problems
What changes around menopause?
As estrogen levels fall, the vagina can become drier and thinner, and the bladder and urethra can be affected too. Doctors call this genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and the dryness and thinning are the most common cause of painful sex at midlife and beyond. Desire can drop as estrogen falls, too.
Why is it worth talking to a doctor?
Because sexual health often reflects overall health. Erectile dysfunction is often an early warning sign of heart disease or other circulatory problems, and the American Urological Association advises that men with it be told it is a risk marker for heart disease and other conditions worth checking. A confidential conversation is a chance to look after both.
