Learn MoreHow much sleep do adults need?
Adults up to age 60 need seven or more hours a night, on a regular basis; the CDC puts it at seven to nine hours from 61 to 64, and seven to eight from 65. Many people fall short: more than a third of US adults report usually sleeping less than seven hours.
Why does sleep matter so much?
Regularly sleeping less than seven hours is linked to weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, depression, weaker immune function, more pain and more mistakes. Day to day, short sleep makes it harder to learn, focus and react, and harder to make decisions and solve problems; it also raises blood sugar above normal and makes common infections harder to fight.
How are sleep, stress and mood connected?
They pull on each other in both directions. Stress at work, family pressures or a traumatic event are common causes of insomnia, and insomnia in turn can leave you anxious, low or irritable. Loss of sleep is also one of the ways stress shows itself.
What habits help you sleep?
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
- Keep your bedroom quiet, cool and dark.
- Remember that the effects of caffeine can last up to eight hours.
- Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed.
- If you don’t fall asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed and do something relaxing until you feel sleepy.
For insomnia that lasts, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine calls cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) the most effective long-term treatment.
What helps with stress?
The National Institute of Mental Health suggests:
- Exercise, and eat healthy, regular meals
- Stick to a sleep routine
- Avoid drinking too much caffeine
- Try a relaxing activity, such as mindfulness or breathing exercises
- Keep a journal
- Notice and challenge negative, unhelpful thoughts
- Stay in touch with friends and family
It may take some trial and error to find what works best for you.
When should I talk to someone?
If you have severe or distressing symptoms that have lasted two weeks or more, such as trouble sleeping, changes in appetite, losing interest in things you enjoy or trouble concentrating, talk to a health professional. If you are struggling or having thoughts of suicide, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988, any time, day or night. In a life-threatening situation, call 911.
