Learn MoreHow common is chronic pain?
Very common. In 2023, 24.3% of US adults had chronic pain, meaning pain on most days or every day for three months, and 8.5% had chronic pain that frequently limited their life or work. It becomes more common with age, from 12.3% of adults aged 18 to 29 to 36.0% of those 65 and older.
What is the difference between acute and chronic pain?
Acute pain starts suddenly and goes away when its cause is treated or healed. Chronic pain lasts longer than three months, or longer than the time in which you should have healed.
What helps with pain besides opioids?
The CDC’s 2022 guideline for clinicians says non-opioid therapies are preferred for pain that lasts beyond a month, and are at least as effective as opioids for many common types of short-term pain. The non-drug options it names depend on the condition, among them:
- Exercise, such as aerobic, water-based or strength exercise, for low back pain, fibromyalgia and hip or knee osteoarthritis
- Weight loss for knee osteoarthritis
- Acupuncture, yoga, mindfulness-based stress reduction and spinal manipulation for low back pain
- Acupuncture and mind-body practices for neck pain
Reviews of the research have found acupuncture more effective than no treatment for back and neck pain and for pain from osteoarthritis, mostly of the knee.
What can an ultrasound show?
Musculoskeletal ultrasound makes pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and joints throughout the body, in real time. It is safe and noninvasive, and uses no ionizing radiation. Ultrasound can’t see inside bone, so doctors use other imaging, such as MRI, for that.
How does HumanBlu help you recover?
Our recovery services are designed to restore muscle function, reduce inflammation, and accelerate healing. Techniques may include contrast therapy and recovery tools.
